Horoscopes and fortunetellers notwithstanding, it is always fascinating to hear people predict the future. Particularly when those making the predictions are world-famous scientists, business executives and investors.

SIMtone had a chance to contribute to the Future In Review (FiRe 2009) that was held last week in the picturesque Hotel Del Coronado. We were selected among several hundred applicants as one of 12 Fire Starters - companies that will change the world in the opinion of the Strategic News Services panel of experts.

Experts and senior executives from Adobe, Amazon, Cisco, Intuit, Microsoft, Qualcomm and SIMtone debated the future of computing.  Opinions varied about the rate and pace of change, but one thing was abundantly clear: the days of the personal computing as we know it are numbered, and the change is brought about by the combination of virtualization, broadband connectivity and the new breed of software platforms that make "the cloud" universally available to every person on the planet.

SIMtone and Microsoft discussed our respective positions which were aired by BBC

on the second day of the conference.

Cloud services are changing all aspects of computing. Why endure the cost and pain of "fat client" ownership when you can get a personal virtual machine from your broadband provider with all the carrier-class reliability and support?

We believe this trend will continue and the SIMtone platform allows telecom providers to embrace the cloud and deliver a broad range of cloud services that makes computing simpler and safer, everywhere.

PS - If you ever visit San Diego in May remember to bring a sweater and a jacket. It was cold. And I know cold. I was born in Moscow and live in Ottawa.
